[06/23/24] Is Ronaldo in Danger at the Euros?

STUMP STORY OF THE DAY

Is Ronaldo in Danger at the Euros?

Cristiano Ronaldo

There were an insane number of fans who went onto the pitch to take pictures with the Portuguese star…

How fans think going onto the field in any sporting event mid-game is a good idea I have no idea. At the 2024 Euros, it’s getting out of hand.

In yesterday’s match between Turkey and Portugal in Dortmund, Germany, 4 fans jumped onto the field and ran towards Cristiano Ronaldo to take selfies. Following the match, the Portugal star was confronted by two more fans who happened to make their way onto the field.

The first supporter who made their way onto the field was a young boy, he was greeted by Ronaldo with a picture and a hug during the 70th minute. When he was led away the crowd cheered and he received pats on the head from some of the lads on the benches.

Later, a teenage boy made his way towards Ronaldo before the Portuguese star raised his hand and waved him away. Not soon after, two adults landed on the field and ran toward him with their phone before they were escorted away by security guards.

Following the match, two more adults found their way onto the field and ended up near Ronaldo. All of these incidents will trigger an automatic disciplinary investigation by UEFA over security inside the stadium.

The fact that 6 humans were able to make their way onto the field is astonishing. This is really not good. Very not good. It was harmless yesterday, but that doesn’t mean it’s not nerve-racking.

UEFA is arguably the most important soccer tournament in the world, falling only behind FIFA in intensity. If you’ve never met a crazy soccer fan, then I’d say you’re lucky. Soccer is different in Europe, think of the biggest football fan you know, then add some, that’s basically an average European soccer fan when they are rooting for their country.

I’m not saying someone is going to run onto the field and try to injure Ronaldo, I’m not saying it’s not going to happen, either. Accidents can happen, too. All it takes is for one guy to fall onto him and hurt him. It’s dangerous, for everyone involved. I’m not sure how six fans can even get onto the field.

I’d expect there to be an uptick in security, as well as increased fines or consequences for the fans who head onto the field. Who knows what’s going to happen, but I can’t imagine anyone involved in the UEFA tournament can be happy about this, especially Ronaldo himself.
