[07/02/24] NBA Free Agency In Review

STUMP STORY OF THE DAY

NBA Free Agency In Review

We’re 2 days into NBA Free Agency and there have been A LOT of moves! Let’s go over some of the ones everybody is talking about and nobody is talking about!

We’re going to go back and forth here between free agency moves that everybody is talking about and nobody is talking about. I’m definitely going to learn something while writing this and maybe you while reading this. If that’s the case I’d call this a successful couple minutes for the both of us!

EVERYBODY is talking about…Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson is officially a Dallas Maverick! The dynasty that was the Golden State Warriors has been dead for about a year now, but their core of Curry, Thompson, and Green are no more. Klay leaving wasn’t much of a shocker, we kind of got the sense that he was moving on. What we didn’t know was that he would be heading to Dallas, to team up with Luka and Kyrie!

Just two weeks after making the NBA Finals and a poor performance against the Boston Celtics, the Mavs have gotten a flamethrower in Klay Thompson! People say he may be running out of juice but I’m not people! I think the guy still has two more good years in the tank! Rooting for him! We’ll see what happens!

NOBODY is talking about…Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

It may not be one of their STARS, but the Nuggets lost another piece of their core that helped them win an NBA Championship just a year ago. Similarly to what happened to Bruce Brown last year, KCP got an offer he couldn’t refuse and had to leave Denver. The Orlando Magic will be paying KCP $66 Million over the next three years! Good for KCP, he’s been a consistent scorer and defender for the Nuggets for two years now and will be able to be the veteran on a very young Orlando team.

EVERYBODY is talking about…Paul George

Nothing like another 3:00 AM ET Paul George bomb! Years ago when he went to the Clippers it was released at 2:00 AM, and this time his signing with the Philadelphia 76ers was released at 3:00 AM ET! Maybe he just has something against Woj but that has to get figured out.

It’s safe to call the LA experiment that caused earthquakes four seasons ago a failure. I remember that happening and thinking ‘wow this team is going to win it all’, far from it! Injuries plaugued the team and they never got their feet wet in the postseason. A new era for LA and a new era for PG13, who now heads to Philly to be the third piece on a three-headed monster along with Embiis and Maxey. This seems like a move that catapults Philly into a top-3 seed in the East! Only time will tell.

NOBODY is talking about…Jonas Valanciunas

The Pelicans sure have been a fun team to watch these last two years. Going all the way back to their postseason series against the Phoenix Suns was the first bit of the Pels the world got to see, and it was ELECTRIC! Whether it was Grand Theft Alvarado being a pest on defense, or Ingram and CJ hitting huts fadeaways, or maybe JV being a beast down low (and haven’t even mentioned Zion). The Pels will be just fine but JV has moved on to the Wizards!

The Wizards now get an experienced big man who will probably be able to mentor new No. 2 overall pick Alex Sarr! The Wizards are in the rebuilding phase of their franchise and a guy like JV who can put up 20 a night without even realizing it is a great pick up to rattle together some wins throughout the regular season. Will always have a soft spot for JV because of his Toronto days! We’ll see what happens in the nation’s capital!
