STUMP STORY OF THE DAY
The American Sports Endeavor
In honor of the 4th of July, let’s take a look at American sports and what the hell made everyone so obsessed with it.
I’m going to warn you, this may get deep or possibly even historical, perhaps it’ll a little weird at times too. Who knows? This is going to be straight out of passion and love for American sports, as it should be. The American way: little thought, lots of passion.
American sports are something that a lot of us grow up around, sometimes it’s something we fall in love with, sometimes it’s not for us. Both are okay, but I’d die on a hill that American Sports are so engrained in the culture that they effect almost every single person in this great country. I mean, for gods sake, the Super Bowl is a national holiday in every sense of the word. People spend their holidays sitting in front of a TV watching sports, and whether you win or lose can change the whole outlook of your day and ensuing days. It’s insane.
As someone who grew up with their life surrounded by sports I can say this, it changed my life. It gave me friends, comradery, things to do, ways to stay healthy, the list goes on and on. The United States is enthralled with the world of sports, I’m not sure it’s a distraction thing, a happiness thing, or just a way to feel all of the emotions a human can within a short few hours. I can’t quite put my finger on it. But what I can put my finger on is why I love sports.
I love sports because it brings me closer to the people in my life. There is nothing like watching a football or basketball game with my friends and family, a little food, a cold drink or two, and a whole bunch of laughs. Football season is almost like having a holiday once a week. It’s an opportunity to reach out to people that you’re close with, make plans, and get together.
It also brings you closer to people you don’t know. If you’ve ever been at a stadium, or in a bar, and there’s strangers all around? Who hasn’t high fived the guy next to him? Who hasn’t even maybe given that guy a hug? Jumped for joy a little? It’s not weird. It’s sports.
On a human level, sports are obviously ways for us to naturally get rid of our competitive edge in a healthyish way. It allows us to put that edge to use and not loose our cool in other ways. Humans are naturally competitive, sports can let them sort out that piece of their biology. Humans are also naturally social, form groups, and compete against the other groups. Sounds a lot like fans of sports teams to me.
America alone is obsessed with sports, the Olympics upcoming is just an example of that. We as a nation are excited to beat the other nations, to prove our worth on the national stage. Humans love sports, Americans love sports. It’s only natural!
