We had some boots on the ground today at Madison Square Garden for Day 1 of the Big East Tournament so for today's Stump Story we'll give out a few takeaways.
In the first game, we had Xavier and Butler. The Musketeers, guard-dominant after losing their bigs early in the season, needed their guards to show. up and they did. Desmond Claude had 24 and Quincy Olivari had 19 points and 9 rebounds. Whenever a bucket was needed they went to them.
Tough season for Butler, a ragtag group that never quite found its footing. Posh looked like he tore something a couple of minutes into the game but came out fresh as febreeze in the second half.
The second game gave us Providence vs Georgetown. The BOO BIRDS were in full effect for former Providence Head Coach Ed Cooley. Even when his face was on the jumbotron the Garden was about as loud as it was all night. It's not just Providence fans that despise him, it seems to be the entire conference, sorry Ed.
Good win for the Friars against a one-man show for Georgetown. Shoutout to you Jayden Epps (30 points).
If you stayed alive for Villanova DePaul, kudos to you! The best finish of the night. The Wildcats took the win 58-57 with a big three with 8 seconds left in the game. Nova was in for a rough night had they lost that one.
All that said my one takeaway was this: we got to see a lot of teams play ball today, the UConn Huskies just seem to be playing a different sport when they are on the court. No team today showed a fraction of the juice that the Huskies have. We'll see what happens but buckle up, because March is in full effect.
