[3/7/24] The Man in Pele's Arena⚽

Young Neymar Jr.

On this day in 2009, a 17-year-old boy made his professional soccer debut. Something that many of us dream of, this young man was achieving: he was playing for his hometown squad. He was well-known across the city for his ability in street soccer competitions throughout his childhood.

This man, much like a legend of Brazil before him, goes by one name: Neymar. Born in Morgi des Cruzes, São Paulo, Brazil, he grew up hearing the legendary stories of Santos FC and the great Pele. His father, a former footballer, raised him in the sport and he blossomed. At the age of thirteen, he was scouted and signed by Santos FC to a youth contract.

In 2009, he finally stepped onto the biggest stage in Brazil. He was already well known locally at that point, but soon, the whole world would know his name. During his 4 years playing for Santos, he averaged a goal every other game. He led the team to the Libertadores Cup, the highest South American club trophy, and won South American Footballer of the Year in 2011 and 2012.

In June of 2013, he left Santos for FC Barcelona. This is the story of how Neymar led his hometown squad to a championship and put Santos on the map once again. He lived in the shadow of Pele and succeeded.
