[4/2/24] A Geno Masterclass

Updated: Jul 2, 2024

UConn Huskies celebrate after defeating (1) USC and advancing to Final Four

The UConn Women seemed to be in one of the worst spots in maybe the last 30 years early this season. The Women had lost some games in a row and fell pretty far back into the top-25, seeing high teen numbers is something that UConn fans are not used to. The team has battle through an unprecedented amount of injuries, including to what would be 4 of their major minute contributors. UConn was almost becomes irrelevant in a season dominated by Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, among other major storylines.

Well, that was then, and this is now. UConn went on to win the Big East Tournament, and last night they punched their ticket to Geno's 23rd Final Four appearance. With 7 players ready to play all tournament, this team has gutted out win after win. They took it to one of the best players in the country (and stump hero) JuJu Watkins and USC in a game where many thought this team would be outgunned. This is the Geno difference. The way this team has rallied around him and his leadership ability has been nothing short of a miracle. He has THREE players play all 40 minutes last night, including Nika Muhl who played the last 13 1/2 minutes of the game with 4 fouls.

It doesn't hurt that Geno has Paige Bueckers, who has shown why she was the highest recruit in her class. In a year dominated by other stars across the NCAA, Paige wants to have a word. She has been nothing short of unconscious this tournament, being the unquestioned leader of the team. She has dominated in all aspects of the game, and is capable of a takeover whenever needed. Veterans like Nika Muhl and Aaliyah Edwards keep the Huskies steady, while youngsters KK Arnold and Ashlynn Shade fill out the starting 5.

For such a historic program, this one has got to feel good for Geno. This squad has battled through injury, losses, question marks, and the UConn haters. This is arguably his grittiest final four team, as these girls show no quit. They are set to take on Iowa and Caitlin Clark this weekend in Cleveland, get your popcorn ready, Geno has a week to prepare to stop the Iowa star!
