At the height of his career, Anthony Kim was the sixth-ranked Golfer in the world. During his first three years on the tour, 2008-2010, he had three PGA wins, competed on Ryder Cup and President Cup teams, and was heralded as one of the brightest young stars in golf.
In May of 2012, he withdrew from the Wells Fargo Championship. The next month, he had surgery on a torn Achilles tendon, and he would never play on the Tour again.
In a recent interview, Kim dove into his battles. He said he also has underwent spinal fusion surgery, hand surgery, and more to repair his body. He fought through drug addiction, depression, and more. Kim said he didn’t leave his house much and spent time with his 6 dogs and 2 monkeys.
Kim basically fell off the face of the earth in the golf world. After his injury, he was never heard from. He didn’t keep in contact, he didn’t play golf, and he didn’t stay in the public eye. Now, Kim has signed a deal with LIV golf to participate in the individual portion of their events. The crazy part is that Kim went on record in an interview saying he didn’t start hitting golf balls again until about 3 months ago.
Kim took a 12 year hiatus from golf, picked up the clubs again, practiced for about 6 weeks, and then got right back into professional golf. He struggled in his return but posted a 5-under 65 in his second appearance on the LIV tour. He’s set to participate in the LIV Miami Open this upcoming weekend, his first tournament in the United States in over 12 years.
Kim, the man who fell off the face of the earth, is now center stage once again on the LIV tour. No matter how he performs, this is an epic redemption story.
