STUMP STORY OF THE DAY

Birmingham-Southern: The Team Without a Home

Birmingham-Southern

The Panthers look to win a D3 National Championship this year, but there’s only one problem, the school doesn’t exist anymore…

To find the best story in college baseball you have to go to a place that no longer exists. Birmingham Southern University opened its doors in 1856, but the school held its final classes this past week and is set to shut down the entire operation within the coming days.

While the school may be closed for business, their baseball team, is very much so wide open for business. The Division 3 Baseball World Series begins this weekend, and Birmingham Southern is one of the 8-remaining teams eyeing a National Championship.

The squad won 13 of their last 14 games, and despite a quick exit from their conference tournament, they haven’t lost once in the NCAA Tournament. The one thing that stands out about this team is their ability to pick each other up. Their offense and pitching is done by committee and they don’t boast any other worldly talent.

The team has been dubbed by many as “America’s Team”, but the players aren’t necessarily paying attention to that. Most of them see it as “free baseball”. The locker room is loose, juice is high, and the comradery is like never before. No matter what, this team won’t be together next year, that allows them to play for each other now and just focus on the task at hand.

There is no tomorrow.

There are even more layers to this team than their University closing. Their best pitcher is Drake LaRoche, son of former MLB first basemen Adam LaRoche, who infamously retired after the White Sox told him his son couldn’t be in the clubhouse as much as he had been. Now, Drake is out of the clubhouse and on the mound, where he’s pitched over 80 innings with a 3.21 ERA.

Another layer to this magical run came just before their Super Regional Win over Denison College to advance to the world series. This time it had to do with a hospital run.

Several members of the team came down with a pretty intense case of food poisoning. It left two players hospitalized, and several others needing IV’s mid game.

Against all odds, Birmingham Southern has made it to Ohio. Through IV’s, a conference tournament disappointment, and even having no university to go home to. This team plays for each other, they play for the right reasons, and they play to win.

The College World Series begins on Friday, May 31st with the Panthers taking on Salve Regina at 3:45 PM.
