Did Wemby Just get a Triple-Double…With Blocks?

(ESPN)

If you didn’t get a chance to watch the 15th-seeded San Antonio Spurs head to Toronto to take on the 13th-seeded Raptors, I can’t entirely blame you. If you were however tuned into the game, you witnessed history. It’s the beauty and the problem with the NBA, with so many teams playing every night you’re bound to miss something. Last night what most of us only got to see as an ESPN alert on our phone, those in Scotiabank Arena got to see firsthand.

Victor Wembanyama notched his second career triple-double. But this one was a little different.

In just under 30 minutes he had 27 points, 14 boards, and 10 blocks!

When he fly-swatted Jakob Poeltl’s first shot attempt away just 17 seconds into the game, it was a sign of things to come. It was a tough night for the Raptors and Head Coach Darko Rajakovic (Check out our ‘Who Is…’ on Toronto’s Head Coach).

After 3 early blocks in the first quarter, Wemby did not get his fourth until the 8:00 minute mark in the third quarter. It was here in the third that within 2 minutes he went on a block frenzy, getting Poeltl twice and Scottie Barnes twice in the span of 3 possessions. With 6:35 left in the fourth Victor got his 10th block and secured his second career triple-double.

He becomes the first rookie since 2004 to record 10 blocks and the fourth since 1973 to record a triple-double with them. He is the only one of the four to also knock down multiple threes in the effort. There have been trees in the NBA before, players who block shots because it is their job, but what makes Wemby different is that not only can he block shots, but he can do everything else as well. There’s nothing he can’t do.

The 7’4 20-year-old from France is just simply different.

I remember seeing clips years ago about this 14-year-old kid from France who was supposed to be the next great, it’s hard to ever really believe those before you can see it firsthand but he is exactly that.

Victor Wembanyama is must watch TV and is going to be a joy to watch in this next generation of NBA superstars.
