We’re going to talk every team, one a day, until the season starts. We’ll start at the bottom and work up. First, we head to the Motor City.

The Pistons of 2023-24 were quite
forgettable. They managed to finish the year with a record of 14-68, which included a 28-game losing streak in the beginning of the year. When the calendar turned to 2024 the Pistons sat at 3-29. This led to the firing of head coach Monty Williams.

The Pistons went out this offseason and actually made some moves that moved the needle. They started by hiring JB Bickerstaff, the former coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and then went and drafted Ron Holland with the 5th overall pick. Not a bad start.

They added Tobias Harris, Paul Reed, Malik Beasley, and Tim Hardaway Jr. in free agency to pair with their young core. Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duran, Jaden Ivey, and Ausar Thompson are all 23 or younger. That’s an emphasis young core. All have shown significant highs to go along with their growing pains, but none of them are considered “busts” quite yet.

The key to this puzzle is the rise of Cade Cunningham. They signed their former No. 1 overall pick to a rookie max contract this past offseason, and he finished last season healthy for the first time since high school. A full offseason and a full vote of confidence from your front office is a recipe for success. Or so they hope.
