SGS Predicts: Super Bowl LVIII

[Picks were made independently, despite ridiculously close scores]

Z:

Super Bowl 58. We’ve got the Chiefs. We’ve got the Niners. I’m sitting here trying to think of what posts I’m going to be scrolling through at 11 pm. Is it going to be graphics of Mahomes and Kelce with 3 Super Bowl rings, and the word dynasty all over the place? Or is it going to be edits of Brock Purdy getting drafted with the last overall pick and then holding up the Lombardi?

Is Kyle Juszczyk going to catch a pass? Yes, yes he is. Is Pacheco going to look like an absolute bulldozer and find his way into the endzone? Probably. Is there going to be drama late in the fourth quarter, there’s gotta be! Would me not getting a single one of these right make sense? I wouldn’t expect it any other way. The only thing I know for sure is this, I don’t want the Chiefs to win, so I’m not going to pick them.

Brock, go get this one. There will be those who are going to find every reason to knock you. Even after the game people are still going to call you a game manager, and say your team is stacked, but who cares? If Christian wins the MVP they won’t give you any credit, but who cares. You’ll have a Super Bowl. And the Twitter warriors won’t. I’ve got the Niners.

San Francisco 49ers 34

Kansas City Chiefs 30

MVP: Brock Purdy

D: The NFL’s biggest stage: The Super Bowl. A familiar place filled with familiar faces for the Kansas City Chiefs. 60 minutes to cement themselves as one of the greatest dynasties in NFL History. To reach the elusive back-to-back Super Bowl Championships, done by the likes of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, John Elway and Terrell Davis, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice and Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, and Vince Lombardi. Will Mahomes, Kelce, and Reid add themselves to this list?

The Chiefs come into today on their hottest stretch of the season. Pacheco has been the bucking bronco in the backfield churning out yards and setting the tone. Mahomes has turned to Kelce to find the spark in the passing game they had been missing all season. Veteran, and perennial All-Pro, Chris Jones leads a suffocating and high-flying defensive unit that’s impressed all year.

Standing in their way is a team that almost felt like the chosen one out of the NFC from the outset, the San Francisco 49ers. Kyle Shanahan has led one of the most consistently dominant organizations in football since taking over in San Fran. He just hasn’t been able to get over the hump come January and February. His staff has been picked apart, rebuilt, and then picked apart again. He knew he needed more talent to get onto the biggest stage in football.

In steps Christian McCaffrey and Brock Purdy. McCaffrey has been one of the most explosive and electric backs in the NFL since he arrived in the league, bringing Carolina relevance despite poor results record-wise. He brought that to San Fran, and they have not been disappointed. Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant, the most unlikely guy to be the difference maker for this team, has been just that: the difference maker. He brings consistency, play-making ability, and the one thing this 49ers team lacked: a true leader under center.

A defense filled with stars, a well-traveled playcaller, and one of the most formidable defensive fronts in football. San Fran brings it on both sides of the ball, Shanahan’s most complete roster.

I can honestly see social media fangirling over both teams as champions tonight, but I still have to make a pick.

San Fran: 34

Kansas City: 31

MVP: Fred Warner
